    Influence of design parameters on cogging torque in permanent magnet machines

    The influence of various design parameters on the cogging torque developed by permanent magnet machines is investigated. It is shown that the slot and pole number combination has a significant effect on the cogging torque, and influences the optimal value of both skew angle and magnet arc, as well as determining the optimal number of auxiliary teeth/slots. A simple factor, which is proportional to the slot number and the pole number and inversely proportional to their smallest common multiple, has been introduced to indicate the “goodness”β of the slot and pole number combination.     Permanent-magnet brushless machines with unequal tooth widths and similar slot and pole numbers

    This paper presents a comparative study of three-phase permanent-magnet brushless machines in which the slot and pole numbers are similar, with reference to conventional brushless dc machines in which the ratio of the slot number to pole number is usually 3 : 2. Three different motor designs are considered. Two have equal tooth widths, with one having a coil wound on every tooth and the other only having a coil wound on alternate teeth, while the third machine also has coils wound on alternate teeth but these are wider than the unwound teeth while the width of their tooth tips is almost equal to the rotor pole pitch in order to maximize the flux linkage and torque. Analytical and finite-element methods are employed to predict the flux-linkage and back-electromotive-force waveforms, and the self- and mutual-inductances, and these are shown to be in good agreement with measured results. It is also shown that the third machine is eminently appropriate for brushless dc operation

    Inequality, Credit Market Imperfection, Segmentation and Economic Growth

    This paper investigates how initial inequality can causally affect economic growth when moral hazard problems exist in credit markets.Two regimes of the credit markets aiming at overcoming the moral hazard problems are analyzed.The formal one such as bank relies on intermediary between borrowers and lenders by asking for collateral.The informal one relies on direct yet costly monitoring by the lenders themselves.However, from the social point of view both of them are unfavorable to certain segments of the agents in this heterogenous economy in terms of whether the individual potential productivity could be fully realized. Consequently, the permission of the coexistence of these two regimes could be growth enhancing.The dynamic rise and fall of the formal and informal regimes are implied along the growth process of per capita income.In the empirical part, the negative relationship between initial inequality and long run growth is discovered, using cross-province data in rural China rather than more often used cross-country data sets in literature.Interestingly, the policy dummy variable telling the permission or forbidding of the informal regime presents a positive sign.Both of these two results support our theoretical model empirically.     Superconducting pairing of interacting electrons: implications from the two-impurity Anderson model

    We study the non-local superconducting pairing of two interacting Anderson impurities, which has an instability near the quantum critical point from the competition between the Kondo effect and an antiferromagnetic inter-impurity spin exchange interaction. As revealed by the dynamics over the whole energy range, the superconducting pairing fluctuations acquire considerable strength from an energy scale much higher than the characteristic spin fluctuation scale while the low energy behaviors follow those of the staggered spin susceptibility. We argue that the glue to the superconducting pairing is not the spin fluctuations, but rather the effective Coulomb interaction. On the other hand, critical spin fluctuations in the vicinity of quantum criticality are also crucial to a superconducting pairing instability, by preventing a Fermi liquid fixed point being reached to keep the superconducting pairing fluctuations finite at low energies. A superconducting order, to reduce the accumulated entropy carried by the critical degrees of freedom, may arise favorably from this instability.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figure

    Eddy-current loss in the rotor magnets of permanent-magnet brushless machines having a fractional number of slots per pole

    We develop an analytical model for predicting the eddy-current loss in the rotor magnets of permanent-magnet brushless machines that have a fractional number of slots per pole, when either all the teeth or only alternate teeth are wound, and in which the unwound teeth may be narrower than the wound teeth. The model enables the magnetic field distribution in the air gap and magnet regions to be determined, by neglecting the eddy-current redistribution effect and assuming that the eddy currents are resistance limited. It can account for space-harmonic magnetomotive forces (MMFs) resulting from the winding distribution and time-harmonic MMFs due to nonsinusoidal phase currents, as well as for the effect of curvature and circumferential segmentation of the magnets. We have validated the model by finite-element analysis, and used it to investigate the eddy-current loss in the magnets of three surface-mounted magnet brushless motors that have similar slot and pole numbers, and employ identical rotors but different stators, when they are operated in brushless ac (BLAC) and dc (BLDC) modes. We show that the stator winding configuration, as well as the operational mode, significantly influence the resultant eddy-current loss

    Modelling barriers for coal dust suppression

    Airborne dust originating from the transport and storage of raw coal has detrimental effects on the environment. Warkworth Mining is seeking to reduce the dust emissions caused by the dumping of raw coal at their facility in Singleton, NSW. The suggested strategy was the construction of windbreaks, for which commercial designs exist. The MISG was asked to advise on the placement and design of such windbreaks. The problem was approached by studying results in the literature on windbreak design, selecting a few possible configurations, and then testing these by solving numerically for the wind velocity around the dumping site. It was concluded that a long fence on the upwind side of the dumping hoppers would provide moderate protection, but would interfere with current operating procedures. As a better option, a long downwind fence immediately behind the hoppers would provide a similar reduction in the dust emission, and allow more effective use of water sprays. Although fine details of the fence design could not be modelled numerically, we concluded that it was desirable for the fence to have an angled overhang in the vicinity of the hoppers, and a porous section near the base to reduce turbulent flows
